The infernal and heavenly proprium/own/self

The New Jerusalem and its Heavenly Doctrine 145. Because acting from freedom appears to man as if from his own proprium, therefore heavenly freedom may also be called the heavenly proprium, and infernalfreedom may be called the infernal proprium. The infernal proprium is that into which man is born, and this is evil; but the heavenly proprium is that into which man is reformed, and this is good.

Heaven and Hell 591…Good flows forth from heaven because all there are in good; and evil flows forth from hell because all there are in evil. The good that is from heaven is all from the Lord; for the angels in the heavens are all withheld from their proprium, and are kept in the Lord’s proprium, which is Good Itself. But the spirits in the hells are all in their proprium, and everyone’s proprium is nothing but evil; and because it is nothing but evil it is hell.

Arcana Coelestia 154. Nothing evil and false is ever possible which is not man’s Own, and from man’s Own, for the Own of man is evil itself, and consequently man is nothing but evil and falsity. This has been evident to me from the fact that when the things of man’s Own are presented to view in the world of spirits, they appear so deformed that it is impossible to depict anything more ugly, yet with a difference according to the nature of the Own, so that he to whom the things of the Own are visibly exhibited is struck with horror, and desires to flee from himself as from a devil. NJHD 82. Man’s Self (proprium) (concerning which see the Doctrine at Arcana Coelestia 70), that it is the Love of Self and the World. A man’s Self (proprium) is nothing but dense evil, Arcana Coelestia 210, 215, 731, 874-876, 987, 1047, 2307, 2308, 3518, 3701, 3812, 8480, 8550, 10283, 10284, 10286, 10731. The Self (proprium) of a man is his voluntary [or will] part, Arcana Coelestia 4328. A man’s Self (proprium) consists in his loving himself more than God, and the world more than heaven, and in holding the neighbour of no account, in comparison with himself; thus it consists in the love of self and the world, Arcana Coelestia 694, 731, 4317, 5660. Not only all evil, but also all falsity, spring from a man’s Self (proprium); and this falsity the falsity of evil, Arcana Coelestia 1047, 10283, 10284, 10286. A man’s Self (proprium) is hell with him, Arcana Coelestia 694, 8480. Whoever therefore is led by Self (proprium) cannot be saved, Arcana Coelestia 10731. The good which a man does from Self (proprium) is not good, but in itself is evil, because it is done for the sake of self and of the world, Arcana Coelestia 8480.

The man’s Self (proprium) must be separated, in order that the Lord may be present, Arcana Coelestia 1023, 1044. And it is actually separated when the man is being reformed, Arcana Coelestia 9334-9336, 9452, 9454, 9938. This is done by the Lord alone, Arcana Coelestia 9445. By regeneration a man receives a heavenly Self (proprium), Arcana Coelestia 1937, 1947, 2881, 2883, 2891. This appears to him as Self (proprium); yet it is not his, but the Lord’s with him, Arcana Coelestia 8497. Those who are in this Self (proprium) are in freedom itself, because freedom consists in being led by the Lord and by His Self (proprium), Arcana Coelestia 892, 905, 2872, 2886, 2890-2892, 4096, 9586, 9587, 9589-9591. All freedom is from self (proprium), and its quality is according thereto, Arcana Coelestia 2880. The quality of the heavenly self (proprium), Arcana Coelestia 164, 5660, 8480. This process is continual

AC 6645. And Joseph died. That this signifies that the case would now be different with the internal of the church, is evident from the signification of “dying,” as being the end of a former state and the beginning of a new one, thus that the state of the church would now be different (that “to die” denotes to cease to be such, see n. 49465876593, and that it denotes the end of a former representation, n. 3253325932766302); and from the representation of Joseph, as being the internal (n. 61776224). The state of the church as it now is, is described in what follows in the internal sense; also the state of its external, which is signified by “his brethren died, and all that generation.”

[2] The case with the church in man is that it successively undergoes new states; for as man is strengthened in the truth of faith and the good of charity, so he is introduced into other states, the former state then serving as a plane for the following state, and so on continually. Thus the man who is a church, or who is being regenerated, is continually led toward more interior things, thus more interiorly into heaven.
