Arcana Coelestia, 6284 … the external is merely a formed something, of such a nature that the internal can be in it, and lead a life there according to the influx into itself from the Lord; neither also is the internal anything else relatively to the highest, which is the Lord, whence is all life; and the things beneath are merely forms recipient of life through the degrees in their order, down to the last, which is the body.

Heaven and Hell, 207 . That between one heaven and another there is influx but not communication can be confirmed from their relative positions. The third or inmost heaven is above, the second or middle heaven is below, and the first or outermost heaven is still lower. There is a similar arrangement in all the societies of each heaven, for example, some dwell on elevated places that appear like mountains (88) on the top of which dwell those who are of the inmost heaven. Below these are the societies of the second heaven, below these again the societies of the outermost heaven, and so on throughout, whether in elevated places or not. A society of a higher heaven has no communication with that of a lower heaven except by correspondences (see above 100), and communication by correspondences is what is called influx.

Arcana Coelestia, 4652… What is the nature of the correspondence between the soul and the body, or between the things of the spirit which is within man and those of his body which are without him, may be plainly seen from the correspondence, influx, and communication of the thought and perception, which are of the spirit, with the speech and hearing, which are of the body. The thought of a man who is speaking is nothing but the speech of his spirit, and the perception of the speech is nothing but the hearing of his spirit. When man is speaking, his thought does not indeed appear to him as speech, because it conjoins itself with the speech of his body, and is in it; and when man hears, his perception appears merely like hearing in the ear. This is the reason why most persons who have not reflected know no otherwise than that all sense is in the organs of the body, and consequently that when these organs fall to decay by death, nothing of sense survives, whereas the man (that is, his spirit) then comes into his veriest life of sensation.
