This idea of the proprium being “dressed up” as something spiritual, also connects for me with the false heavens that were/are present when a last judgement or the “close of the age” of the church occurs – as in the end of the Jewish Church and Christian Church and the last judgement of a church in us. Re AC 4535. And we only see that is has been “dressed up” once we allow the angels to look at it.

Your phrase ‘proprial investment in spiritual things’ is terrific. That’s a good definition of historical faith at its worst– when it stubbornly refuses to be softened and re-made (I guess replaced is a better term than re-made) by the genuine religion that the Lord wants to give us.

Are we looking at the affection for the truth of the church from our hellish proprium, from what is lower with our natural eyes, in the light of the world? Of course then affection for truths will look like evils and falsities like they did for Simeon(falsity) and Levi(evil) and they will cry in outrage and insist on their removal and destruction. But just as evil recognises itself in others, like the evil spirits and genii appearing to each other in normal human… Read more »
