Inner Transformation: How to Experience the Psycho-active Quality of Sacred Text

“In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was towards God, and God was the Logos… All came into being through Him, and without Him not one came into being that has come into being…” Gospel of John 1:1 & 3

In this presentation, Rev David Millar offers insights into the psychoactive properties of spiritual texts. The starting assumption is that spiritual texts are provided to support the processes involved in spiritual awakening. This capacity means that they are much more than simply a source for intellectual or historical curiosity. They are designed to be read so that the truths within them can be used to examine the quality of the thoughts and feelings that make up our mental life. Such knowledge is required if destructive patterns of thinking and feeling are to be identified and worked with so that the process of inner transformation can begin.

To this end, in 2003 David developed a methodology called Logopraxis, which simply means to “practice the Word”. The Logopraxis community meets in small groups, either face to face or online, to share insights and offer mutual support. The specific texts on which this community bases its practice are those found within the Swedenborgian spiritual tradition. Perhaps one of the most remarkable things to arise from this practice has been the rediscovery of the Logos as the Living Word.

Indeed, in seeking to read and practice the Text practitioners continue to re-discover that it is the Text that is actually reading them.
